Two promising young entrepreneurs were crowned winners of the competition at an Awards Ceremony on the 16th of November 2011. The event was the culmination of a rigorous process, held under the auspices of Global Entrepreneurship Week. Thabang Mabuza of Investong Human Capital and Sthembiso Makelefane of Twice Clean Bottle Hygiene both well thought-out and viable business plans, impressing the judges with their energy, belief in their ideas and excellent pitches before the final judging panel.
Twice Clean Bottle Hygiene is an SMME entity that is mainly envisaged to collect, hygienically wash and sterilise used glass bottles for commercial re-use in the beverage, food and pharmaceutical industries. We source used glass bottles from a well-researched and informed network of glass bottle collectors made up of vendors and bottle banks all around our areas of operation.
After collection, our bottles undergo a rigorous process of hygienic washing to ensure sterility and suitability for reuse. This business idea has fascinated many influential business entities. In particular, BHP Billiton, via its Samancor Manganese division, took particular interest in the project and subjected it to a 10 month process of ascertaining the commercial viability of the business idea. In the end, BHP Billiton decided to disburse an amount of R 1 500 000 to fund the project, signalling their convictions that this business idea is highly viable.
INVESTONG Human Capital is a sustainable merchandising & campaigns agency. It is our ambition and objective to challenge large corporates & retailers worldwide to rethink the way they market & give away their brand. We do this by developing sustainable merchandising, developing consumer/employee awareness campaigns & events and selling up our own awareness campaigns and inviting companies & retailers to join us Our merchandising products are (handmade) by fair trade and community -based producers in Gauteng. Working with us, our clients become involved in a fair supply & production chain that enables employment creation and empowerment. Together we ignite the energy, creativity and economic power of previous marginalized producers.
Mathematician Mmabatho Mokiti from Mathemaniacs was awarded the Runner-up prize of R10 000 worth of Mentorship from Business Partners. Mathemaniacs is a private Mathematics and Science tutoring company aimed at bringing the FUN into Maths and Science. Most learners’ have developed a negative attitude towards these subjects and so we are determined to eliminate that attitude by giving the learners private one-on-one lessons in their place of safety, where they feel comfortable. We also organize workshops and camps for larger groups. We bring the FUN by using innovative teaching methods and applying Maths and Science to real life.
Our tutors are all Science or Engineering university students, so they have an excellent knowledge of the Maths and Science curriculum. Most of the tutors are also tutors at their respected universities. We also make sure that we keep up with the school curriculum, so as to know what to teach the learners.
The success of our program is due to the private one-on-one tutoring, so we give the learners’ individual attention, so we can address their problems in detail and design a learning method which will best work for them and will result in a maximum change in both the learners’ attitude and marks. In the case of larger groups, we divide the learners into smaller groups (maximum 6) and assign a tutor to each group and they will collectively work on the problems with their tutors.
“Their innovation, tenacity and dedication to chasing their dreams can serve as a true inspiration to all aspiring entrepreneurs,” says Martin.“And the fact that they are so young, is perhaps most impressive and a paints positive picture of South Africa’s future.”
They were then awarded their prizes of a R10 000 Business Partners Mentorship Voucher and Laptop sponsored by IBM. The finalists will also be given the opportunity to apply for free business incubation by Shanduka Black Umbrella’s Johannesburg branch.
With the guidance of Mentors experienced in the SME industry and the exposure they have received from participating in the competition, the 2 would-be tycoons are hoping to attract investors or funders that can help them see the fruition of their hard work and business dreams.
