World Cup and the War for Talent
October 21, 2010
Get a glimpse behind the corporate glass with HR Future’s workplace radical. In the Beginning In 1994, South Africa was catapulted onto the global stage, for the dream-like-transition from an apartheid state to a democracy. Unlike other countries on the continent that had fallen to civil war, corrupt leaders and “slavery” debt traps, South Africa [...]

Get a glimpse behind the corporate glass with HR Future’s workplace radical.
During a bull run, as we have experienced in the past five years, employers were throwing money at HR and talent, with the concentration of an intoxicated driver on the N1. Let’s build the employment brand for a million or two. Call the workplace a “campus” or “academy”, without changing much else. So faddish. Bump up ETD (education, training and development) claiming better business performance. Forget about return on investment. Need to hire talent? Just bid higher than competitors, without investigating the individual’s track record…

The Underpaid Employee
As this column enters the third year in your favourite HR magazine, I never imagined being in this tight corner: so much content to consider each month, from sweeping conjecture and “did you know” material to devilish detail and brutal facts. It is enough to make any HR Executive blush. A recent example – I must thank an individual, possibly a reader of this column, called the “Underpaid Employee” that anonymously sent me over 9000 words about their organisation’s management, HR and talent. That is a lot of writing and commitment! The individual did their homework and went the extra mile to make it easy for me to validate the information. I received details of office locations, job specs, organisational survey data, comparative graphs, names and personal experiences. What more could I ask for?nbsp; While the content did not make it into this column, I have published it on my blog, excluding the personally identifiable information…

In April 1999, Chris Locke, Doc Searles and David Weinberger dropped a bombshell with their Cluetrain Manifesto: the End of Business as Usual – when internetworked markets meet intranetworked workers, there is a transformation of what is inside and outside your business. The organisation has two sweeping choices, hide behind the sanitised corporate babble or get in the conversation. Nine years later, many SA organisations remain outsiders to conversations about them…nbsp;

Sex and Business
Sex. Business. Sizzling hot under the collar or the blouse. Organisations have been named for their first time in it. And shamed for indiscretions in society. Executives lost their heads over it. (Excluding divorce settlements when their wives found out). Employees have slept their way to the top for position and power. Some of my cynical friends call it social empowerment. The darker side is the muted reality of sexual harassment…
