During the bull run from 2003 – mid 2008, many South African companies competed for talent by throwing money in their direction and hoping the returns followed. They invested in the employment brand that was nothing more than a marketing pitch. Need to hire talent? Just bid higher than competitors and sweeten the deal with a sign up bonus. The individual’s track record was an afterthought. During the year, staff could spend weeks away at conferences and seminars, without having to use the information in the workplace. If talent brought a higher offer from a competitor, HR usually matched it to keep them. There was enough pocket change left over for business trips to Mauritius, extreme team building in Magaliesberg and social functions at five star venues…
